English
This term, children will be building on their understanding of descriptive language and sentence structure.
They’ll be learning to use adjectives, conjunctions, fronted adverbials, and subordinate clauses as they explore a variety of writing styles, including non-chronological reports, biographies, narratives, and instructional texts.
There will also be a continued focus on applying spelling and grammar skills, as well as developing their use of punctuation and broadening their vocabulary.
Mathematics
This term, we will continue to build children's confidence and understanding in maths through our mastery approach.
Key areas of focus will include place value up to 10,000, addition and subtraction, perimeter, and multiplication and division.
Children will also be developing their reasoning skills and learning how to explain their mathematical thinking clearly.
To support fluency, there are daily opportunities for practice and consolidation, including regular use of Times Table Rockstars to help strengthen times tables knowledge.

Planet Protectors
This exciting topic is designed to help children explore their impact on the world around them and understand how their choices can shape a better future. They will learn how the environment affects animals both locally and globally, and how even small changes can make a big difference.
We want our children to feel empowered to be the change — to take action and make a positive impact on the world today.
To bring this learning to life, we’ll be visiting Warley Woods to create land art and Dudley Zoo to deepen our understanding of animals, their habitats, and the environmental challenges they face.
Throughout the term, children will also be developing important skills through the Abbey ethos, which includes:
-
Soft Skills: Debating, creative problem solving, listening, and showing empathy
-
Life Skills: Tying shoelaces, basic sewing, and caring for the community
-
Bucket List Experiences: Visiting a zoo, enjoying a Christmas party, and taking part in fundraising activities
Homework
The homework each week will be:
Spelling Tests
Children will be given a hard copy of their spellings each week, and these are also available to download from the school website. Spellings will be tested every Thursday.
If your child forgets their copy, spare ones are always available in the classroom—just ask the class teacher.
You can also practise spellings online using your ‘Spellingframe’ login. Follow the link here: Spellingframe.

Reading Books and Diaries
Each child has a school reading book. Please read with your child at home and record this in their reading diary.
Children are responsible for changing their own reading book, either at story time or first thing in the morning.
Reading diaries will be checked by the class teacher every Thursday. However, it is important that children bring their reading diary into school every day, as plans may change or they may have the opportunity to read with an adult.
TT Rockstars
Please encourage your child to log in to TT Rockstars as often as possible.
Regular practice will help them build confidence with their times tables while earning points and rewards along the way.
Statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
In June, Year 4 pupils will be required to take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The check is to test if children can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is important for fully accessing many areas of the Mathematics curriculum throughout Key Stage 2, and beyond. The MTC is an on-screen check with 25 times tables questions. Children will have six seconds to answer each question. The check should take around five minutes to complete. Children have been practising their times tables on a regular basis with their class teachers using a range of teaching and learning tools such as games, songs and www.ttrockstars.com, which they can also access at home too.
PE
Swimming
Swimming lessons will take place every Friday. We will be leaving school promptly at 9:00am, so please make sure your child arrives on time.
Children must bring the correct swimming kit each week. A swimming cap is strongly recommended, especially during the winter months, as it helps keep hair dry and warm. Please remember that we do not have any hair-drying facilities at the pool.
Jewellery must not be worn for swimming, and children with verrucas should wear swimming socks.
PE
PE kits should be in school at all times. Children will take them home at half-term to be washed and ready for the next half-term. The kits should include: a white t-shirt, royal blue shorts and black PE pumps. Plain black or navy jogging bottoms can be worn in the winter.
This term we will be focusing on Football and Gymnastics.
